I often get the question, “What would possess a man to leave a career in software and take up farming? You are so brave to agree to it.” (Come to think of it, I’ve asked that question myself!) The question people are really asking is, “Isn’t it scary to leave behind a stable income when you have a wife and three young children to support and follow a dream where the future is unknown?”
The answer is Yes. It is scary. But I am not brave. I was inspired! Inspired by Dan Miller’s book 48 Days To The Work You Love.
I read this book somewhere between the time that Papa the Farmer first suggested the idea of taking up farming and the time he started the farm. Knowing his intentions, I surprised Papa the Farmer with a copy of this book. I figured “If we’re going to do this crazy thing, we might as well have a guide!” But I read it myself first, before giving it to Papa the Farmer to make sure I wasn’t opening a can of worms that I would regret later!
As I read this book, I began to catch a vision. I began to understand Papa the Farmer’s viewpoint (of how difficult it is to be stuck in traffic and stuck in a cubicle when you’d rather be outside pulling weeds and chasing chickens). I also began to see how our family needed to develop a vision for where we are going, what we are doing and why. Up until that point we had been existing from day to day and doing what needed to be done, but I was so overwhelmed in laundry, dishes and diapers that I had not stopped to think about my purpose.
Having a “why” makes all the difference in the world!
Dan Miller doesn’t promise it will be easy, but he lays out a plan of action for doing what you love with your life. Everything from recognizing your vocation to interview techniques are covered in this book. This is not some boring, academic career book. This is a witty, practical and very easy to read book about how to get your job and your dreams to line up. At the end of each chapter are specific exercises to help set your feet on the path towards a fullfilled and satisfying life.
If you don’t wake up each day feeling like, “Yay! I get to go to work today!” or feeling like your vocation is a vacation… This is the book for you!
