Things change when you have children. And then things change again when you have a lot of children. One of the things that has changed the most over the course of our marriage is the car we drive. We began our marriage driving a 2-door Ford Thunderbird. When we drove that car into the ground, we thought “We're going to have children soon. We'd better get a family car.” So we felt very grown-up and responsible when we upgraded to a 4 door Mazda Protege. What we didn't consider was the size of carseats. When baby #3 came along we realized that we couldn't fit 3 carseats in the back of that car and we bought a Toyota Sienna. Right now the Sienna is working well for us, but if we have one or two more babies we're going to need something bigger. Honestly, I'm not excited about driving (parking!) a big old shuttle-bus-type-of-van. I've been thinking about it and come up with what I believe is the best vehicle for Large Families that is also trendy and fun! Limos!
~Limos are long enough to fit everyone.
~We can buy a used limo pretty cheaply on Craigslist.
~Everyone will think we are rich.
~We'd never have to rent a limo for homecoming or prom.
~Every time we go would be a reason to get dressed up. I mean, you're getting in a limo, right? Can't do that in yucky clothes!
~We'll be the only one driving a limo to Walmart. (I'll never loose my van in the parking lot again!)
~We'd get to park right in front of the airport. No using the parking garage like everybody else. At least, that's how it works in the movies.
~Limos have a ton of room for groceries… there are even cupboards to put the groceries in! (See picture below)
~Just imagine the reaction the first time we pull up in our limo at church and a whole bunch of farm children start pouring out the back!
~We could rent it out and make our money back. It could be like buying a car for free!
~You could fill the wet bar with sippy cups and orange juice and really be sporting the whole limo thing.
~I'd be the hippest Mama in town.
~There's a WALL between the passengers and the driver. A WALL y'all. And it's soundproof. Every large family mama should have one of those, no matter what you drive.
~And after the kids go to bed, you can always use the limo for a Mama-Party!
Disclaimer: It's April 1st and this was a fun post to write! Papa the Farmer and I have joked about buying a limo for a while now, but in actual fact, they don't accommodate multiple carseats very well, you may need a commercial driver's license and special insurance to drive one and a professional limo driver I know told me that they're actually not very safe. So don't base your purchasing decisions on a blog post you read once. As far as safety goes, maybe something along the lines of a police wagon would do the trick…
A big Thank You to my friend Erica for providing the pictures for this post. Erica's husband rented this pink hummer limo for her birthday this year. She's one of the coolest people I know, but even she doesn't get to drive around town in this awesome car every day!
Update: Some readers have been asking how I would park this, if I really drove a pink hummer limo. The answer is I wouldn't park it. I would just stop driving and wherever it happened to be when I stopped driving is where it would be parked. And no, I would never go in reverse either.
