Here at the Good Old Days Farm we love to read! We especially like self-help books. Anything that helps us improve our characters or have a better life is right up our alley! So a couple of years ago I was intrigued when Papa the Farmer brought home an audio book from the library called A Complaint-Free World by Will Bowen.
The book is basically a challenge to not complain for 21 days straight. Sounds easy right? Well let me tell you, I would not consider myself a complainer, but this is a lot harder than it sounds! The fact is, we all complain and sometimes the complaints slip out of our mouths before we even realize it! If you’re like me, you know at least one chronically-glass-half-empty kind of person and do your best to avoid them. We all know how nasty someone else’s complaining mouth sounds! Of course, we all think our own gripes are justified, but really our complaints sound as bad to other people as other people’s complaining sounds to us! This book is full of inspirational stories and motivation to develop a new habit of not complaining. Now this doesn’t mean we have to suddenly turn into Pollyanna. We will experience negative emotions and occasionally need to express them. A Complaint Free World teaches us how to express concerns or problems in a way that is productive and not just negative and whiny.
The method is simple. You slip a purple wristband over your wrist. Now don’t get caught up in perfectionism here. If you don’t have a purple wristband, use another color or an elastic band or even those silly bandz that get all over the house and need a useful purpose anyway. (Oops! Did I just complain about silly bandz? Back to Day #1 for me!) If When If you catch yourself complaining, slip the band onto the other wrist and start counting at Day #1 again. When you have not complained for 21 consecutive days you have formed a new habit, a new attitude, and really a new lifestyle!
Ready to take up the challenge? I’m warning you again – it’s not as easy as it sounds! The author shares his own experience. It took him several months to get through the challenge, but finally he reached the evening of the 20th day. Then – you guessed it! A complaint slipped out of his mouth and he had to start back at Day #1 again!
(The Quote of the Day says: “If you have time to complain about something, you have time to improve it.” Ouch!)
Papa the Farmer and I have taken up the challenge a couple of times now, but in all honestly, we’ve never finished. One time I was so upset at somebody that I actually took my wristband somewhere around Day #7 and threw it away just so that I could say something ugly! (I was pregnant and hormonal at the time. Is that an excuse? No, it really isn’t.) But the main problem is simply that we get busy and we forget to keep track. After several days we can’t even remember what day we’re on and so we give up. Well, today I signed on to the Complaint Free World website and I found several new (to me!) tools to help! They have a Facebook Page, a Twitter Account and a You Tube Channel where you can follow them for encouragement. They sell wristbands and other miscellaneous gear on their website. And they even have this great widget that downloads to your desktop for free! See the screenshot above? It automatically counts the number of days you have gone complaint-free and gives a little tidbit of encouragement each day. When you slip up and have to start over, you just press the green button and it will restart the counter.
Now for the most exciting news! Tomorrow (Wednesday, October 26!), Will Bowen is unveiling his brand new 5-week virtual course called “Complaint-Free Living.” The cost is $125 for the 5 week sessions, or if money is tight you can pay just what you are able. If money is really tight but you still don’t want to miss out, there are even scholarships available to take the course for free! If you’re interested in joining, click on the banner or click here to be taken to the course’s website.
Papa the Farmer and I are going to take up the challenge! Will you join us? You don’t need to take the course or even purchase a wristband to join in the challenge (although I do highly recommend the book for motivation!) If you are joining in, please leave a message in the comments so that we can encourage each other!
