We’ve had our first casualty building the tiny house. See this picture below?
In case you’ve never seen one before, that is a nail gun. It uses a tank of compressed air for power. When you pull the trigger it shoots really big nails out at a really high speed. Basically, you don’t want to get in the way of a nail coming out of one of these things.
People who use power tools know to be careful, but bad things can still happen, an accident. Even to careful people. I know several people who have shot a nail through their finger using one of these nail guns. It happens so fast and it can happen so easily.
One of the men who came to help us – who asks to be known by his “real” name of “Tim the Tool Man” – accidentally shot himself in the finger with the nail gun one day last week. He came in the house with Papa the Farmer and Farm-Aunt. Everybody was looking a bit pale. I can’t imagine how much it must hurt for a nail to go shooting through your finger. We disinfected the finger and bandaged it up for him before he went home. He promised to seek medical care in the morning. I was trying to think what natural remedy I had handy that might help his finger feel better. The best thing I came up with was peach leaves. Most of the leaves have fallen to the ground now, but there were still a few peach leaves on one tree. I grabbed a few leaves that were still green and gave them to him with instructions to make a poultice with them at home and leave the poultice on his finger overnight.
We didn’t hear from Mr. Tool Man again for a few days. Finally I got this email from his wife:
It was so funny! He woke up the next morning after we put the peach leaf poultice on it to find that it was perfectly healed! He was kind of disappointed, as he had shared with his co-workers that he had put a nail all the way through his finger & was looking forward to showing the black & blue swollen wound to them at work…but all you could see was a normal looking finger with a pink dot on each side. “I can’t show this to them…they’ll just make fun of me!” HA HA!! so much for bragging rights!! Needless to say, he was VERY impressed with what you did and the quick healing it caused. It wasn’t even painful and he was back to playing the piano the next day.
Poor Guy. I mean, if you’re going to go through the pain of having a nail shoot through your finger you should at least have a fantastic war-wound to show off to your buddies the next day, shouldn’t you?
