Lately, the Little Farmhands have been driving me absolutely around-the-bend-crazy. Every day it’s the same thing: “Mama, let’s read a skunk story!” “Mama, can you read us a skunk story?” “Mama, let’s read another skunk story!” Skunks, skunks, skunks, skunks, skunks!!! That’s all I’m hearing about these days! And the one that can’t talk yet… he just brings me the book and says, “Uuuuuhhh”!
They are talking about the book Skunk Tales by Lynn Marie Hurtado. It’s a 240 page collection of 36 tales about Lynn Marie and her son. Some of the stories revolve around the spiritual lessons they learned as they tried to rid themselves of a little skunk (with a big stink!) who lived under their house, but there are also stories about other animals and other situations. Each story presents some kind of challenge that had to be overcome and illustrates God’s faithfulness to care for even the smallest details of the Hurtado family’s life. The stories are simple and sweet, but memorable.
Skunk Tales has won the Moonbeam Children’s book award and as of today, it has also won the prestigious “Little Farmhand Favorite” Award! (Ok, so that might not be a prestigious award, but it is an enthusiastic endorsement!) I asked the Little Farmhands, “What was your favorite story?” They said, “They’re ALL our favorite stories! We like the first story and the other stories are funny too!”
Mama likes this book too! I like the way the stories focus on the simple, every-day details of our lives and help me show the children that we can come to God with any problem. I like the simple line illustrations which get the children’s attention and are attractive without being overdone. I like that the stories are about every day occurrences and have relevance to the children’s lives. For example, when we read about what a blessing it was for Lynn Marie to become friends with her elderly neighbors, we were reminded to visit our own elderly neighbors!
Each story is followed by it’s own devotional page with discussion questions, several relevant Bible verses, a couple of suggested songs, activities to help you apply the lesson in the story, and also a prayer suggestion. One other feature that is a favorite around here is the featured idiom in each story! Our Little Farmhands love to apply their newly-learned idiom in conversation throughout the day! Lately, everyone around here has either been “in a pickle” or “busy as a beaver”!
All in all, this is a very good book and is sure to be a Good Old Days Farm Favorite for a long time to come!
