The end of the year is quickly approaching and I always look forward to a new year! The idea of turning a page and starting fresh is just so appealing and hopeful!
One thing I used to do each year was pick a new Bible Reading Program. Lately I’ve been using the Bible Reading Program for Shirkers and Slackers and it is hands-down my favorite Bible Reading program EVER! So I’ve decided instead of changing reading programs, I’m going to try reading the Bible in different versions. I grew up on a King-James only Bible reading diet and but I’ve grown to love my Amplified Bible! If there’s anything I love better than my Amplified Bible it’s old hymns and gospel songs. Recently I was asked to review the Gaither Homecoming Bible. Talk about a Bible that combines the best of both these worlds that I love! Let me give you a tour…
First of all, this is a pretty Bible. It’s a hardcover New King James version Bible with a pretty dustjacket (seen above), but even if you take the dustjacket off the Bible is dark green with gold lettering and a pretty insignia on it. Does that matter at all and should it affect your purchasing decision? No. But I like pretty, so I’m just sayin’… You’ll also find color on every page of this Bible. It may be a tiny splash of color, but at least it’s color. Again, does this matter? Maybe or maybe not. I know that I’m much more likely to pick up a book that has pretty pages than plain black and white pages. I can’t help it. It’s the little girl who lives inside of me! Of course, there’s also an almost-middle-aged woman living inside my body too and that lady doesn’t have very good eyesight any more. So, while I typically read Bibles with super-giant print (because Large Print just isn’t very large any more!) the print in this Bible is large enough that I don’t complain.
The full title of this Bible is The Gaither Homecoming Bible: Inspiring Hope Through Scripture, Song and Story. What I really love about this Bible is that throughout this Bible the Gaithers have included the lyrics and stories behind much loved church hymns…
And also the stories behind well known Gospel Songs (many of which were written by the Gaithers themselves).
Why did I take 2 pictures of Gospel song pages? I don’t know. It’s so pretty that I just got carried away.
Another neat feature is that several verses pertaining to music are highlighted within the text:
And finally, of course, many of the Gaither Homecoming Friends have written little stories that appear throughout the text, sharing personal experiences relating to various verses. There is a temptation to think that just because somebody sings on stage they have life all pulled together, but in fact, these writer-singers are ordinary people who have ordinary situations and circumstances. I have been blessed and delighted by reading some of these insights.
This is a Bible that has some delightful features for the seasoned Bible reader, and is also very user friendly for a brand new Bible Reader! Don’t know where to start? Start with the 60-Days Through the Bible With the Homecoming Family reading plan at the back of the book! This is a reading plan that takes you from Genesis to Revelation in 60 days, including stops along the way to read stories by the various homecoming artists! Read and be blessed!
